Burger King edges into the black in Morocco

After seven years of operations, Burger King’s franchisee in the Morrocan market has recorded a profit for the first time. According to local media reports, this amounted to “a few million dirhams” (one million dirhams equals just over USD100,000).
Burger King had sales of MAD110 million (USD11.4 million) in Morocco during 2018, up 5.8% on the previous year. There are currently 16 Burger King restaurants in the country (seven of which are located in Casablanca), with additional openings planned for later this year.
The Burger King brand is owned by US-based Yum! Brands (which also owns KFC and Pizza Hut), and its local franchisee is General First Food Services, which is a joint venture between Retail Holding (the parent of local Carrefour franchisee Label’Vie) and Saudi Arabia-based Olayan Group. The latter has operated Burger King restaurants in the Middle East and North Africa since the early 1990s.
