Founded in the Netherlands in the 1930s, Spar has had a presence in Africa for more than half a century. It currently has 153 stores across nine sub-Saharan countries (excluding South Africa, which had a combined turnover of more than €750 million in 2018. A number of entities license the Spar banner in Africa, and these either operate stores themselves or sub-license the banner to independent retailers.
